Construction law and commercial real estate

Raised in a family construction business and having worked summers in heavy civil construction through high school and college, Nick brings a “dirt-to-desk” perspective to contract drafting and negotiation that’s rare in the construction bar. He understands what the language on the page is actually asking the people in the field to do.
Nick represents general contractors, family-owned subcontractors, and commercial developers, with a focus on handling risk at the contracting stage and securing favorable deal terms before the work begins. The premise of his practice is that most construction disputes can be prevented by careful contracting upstream, and that the cost of careful contract work is small compared with the cost of unwinding a poorly allocated risk after a problem develops.
He also advises on commercial leasing, helping clients protect and maximize the value of their real estate assets. The combination of construction practice and real estate practice tracks the way the work actually flows for many clients: a developer building a project, a property owner improving a building for a new tenant, or an institutional investor evaluating a portfolio with deferred capex.

The substance of Nick’s practice is informed by a working background that started long before law school.
Nick spent summers from 2014 through 2019 working as an office and field assistant at Cal Prime Inc. in Bakersfield, California. The work covered the full range of a heavy civil operation: reading and implementing plans, operating excavators, front-end loaders, and water trucks, preparing and servicing equipment at 4:30 each morning, shoveling dirt by hand for full days, and assisting in the bid process by sourcing quotes and delivering bids to municipalities on schedule. The exposure to construction operations from the labor side, the office side, and the bid side shapes how Nick reads and drafts construction contracts today.
From 2019 through 2022, Nick worked as a farmer at Apex Livestock and Supply in Lott, Texas, managing a herd of more than 600 head, developing herd-management software, and delivering more than 800 kids over a 12-month span. The work included the legal mechanics of livestock buying, selling, and processing, and earned him the American FFA Degree, the highest honor awarded by the National FFA Organization (held by roughly the top 1% of FFA members).
Nick’s record of leadership and service started well before law school and continues in the profession today.

If you’re considering a project, structuring a transaction, or working through a problem that’s developing, we’d be glad to talk. The decisions made early in a deal compound, and engaging the right legal counsel before the structure is locked in is meaningfully more valuable than fixing things later.
